Many organizations have established replacement planning, succession planning or talent management programs to ensure leadership continuity at a time when talent shortages constrict growth or pending retirements threaten business continuity. But some organizations are missing an additional dimension—that is, technical succession planning, defined as a systematic process for transferring institutional memory and for transferring proprietary knowledge gained from the unique experiences of an organization. Technical succession planning also focuses on transferring technical knowledge—that is, unique knowledge about the organization’s technology (such as engineering wisdom). This workshop addresses this cutting-edge issue, a missing element in many organizational succession programs.
