In 2007, the market for high-power diode lasers grew by 1.4% to $290 million.* High-power diode pumps for solid-state lasers and fiber lasers accounted for 59% of the market, with single emitter pumps showing strength as a major growth driver. The three major application areas for high-power diode lasers, including direct diode and diode-pumped, are military followed by materials processing and medical. When pumps are removed from the equation, growth in these markets remained largely flat with slight increases in some applications and decreases in others. Although not a stellar year for high-power diode lasers, there are reasons to remain optimistic about the overall high-power semiconductor laser market. These include opportunities for growth in the percentage of high-power applications that use semiconductor lasers, emerging applications in areas such as displays and energy, and the development of new applications no longer constrained by the limitations of other lasers that are not as compact, efficient, robust, reliable, varied in wavelength or scalable in power.
