The Fifth International Biennial SELF Research Conference, “Enabling Human Potential: The Centrality of Self and Identity” will be held from 13-15th January, 2009 at the Inter-Continental Al Ain Resort in the United Arab Emirates. This conference is jointly convened by the International Program for Arab Development and the Global SELF Research Centre. With its focus being on different research traditions that drive self and identity research, this conference will provide a forum for cutting-edge international research on self-concept, identity, and related constructs. Prominent researchers in the fields of the self, self-esteem, self-efficacy, identity, and the social psychology of the self will discuss issues relating to a) the similarities and differences between leading theories; b) the impact of self-concept on motivation in different spheres of life; c) the theoretical and empirical links between self and identity; and d) the relation between self, identity, and globalisation. Keynote speakers, who are internationally renowned researchers in the area, include Herbert Marsh, Ralf Schwarzer, Maher Abu Hilal, Martin Maehr, and Kit-Tai Hau.
