«The Left» in the international political context»
Saint Petersburg, September 26-27, 2008.
The St.-Petersburg State University
Faculty of philosophy and political science
The international congress is planned by organizers as a forum where representatives of political parties and social movements, as well as scientists and experts from several countries could discuss various aspects and prospects of "the modernized social democracy".
The development of contemporary left movement in Latin America, EU countries and Russia shows the crisis of liberalism and traditional social democratism. The political picture of the modern world looks rather complicated and inconsistent. One of the perspective emerging phenomena is the new modern socialism, requiring a comprehensive estimation today. The basic goal of analysts and practical experts today is to rethink and reposition the social democracy as a real practical concept for the XXI century.
During the XX century the left ideology and the left political forces rendered significant influence on the formation of social and economic policies in the developed countries of the West. Well-established by the second half of the XX century and still existing corrected model of "the social market democracy" was the direct consequence of domination of the left ideas in economic and social policies. One of the tasks the congress is to resolve is to reveal theoretical grounds of social and economic policies, bring to light its conceptual and practical manifestation in the form of welfare state, finding the reasons of welfare state crisis and failure of many basic elements of the left social and economic policies in the late XX - beginning of the XXI century.
Invited to take part in the congress are representatives of social-democratic parties and movements, representatives of non-profit organizations, sociologists and political scientists interested in the discussion of various aspects of the modern left ideology.
