Millennium III: Time, Transition, and The Human
Condition, a vast concept, was chosen in recognition of
the unprecedented cultural and technological changes
evident in this period of human history which profoundly
affect all of us. We live in a time when our sense of
personal and national safety, our personal liberties, indeed
our fundamental awareness of what it means to be human,
seem to be under greater assault than ever before in living
memory. Many have come to feel alienated from our basic
institutions, and even from one another. Existing paradigms
have become too limiting to allow for the variety and
complexity of human experience. The fallout can be seen in
the varied manifestations of human suffering we, as
psychotherapists, encounter daily. Yet, the financial levers
of power are being exercised in a manner that defines
psychotherapy in terms that are reduced to numbers and
symptom lists. This represents a reductionistic view of the
human condition and of human nature itself. We believe
that we are rapidly approaching an evolutionary crossroads
in human consciousness, and the course we choose has
never been so critical.
The American Academy of Psychotherapists is committed to a
broader and deeper concept of our professional relationship
to the human condition, and our understanding of what that
condition is. Because of humankind’s ability to imagine new
realities, we are quite literally in a position to impact our own
evolutionary path. Psychotherapy’s unique support of a
process that allows those imaginings to emerge, individually
and collectively, is our greatest contribution.
Though an exploration of the magnitude of this modern
cultural transformation cannot possibly be encompassed in a
single effort, our goal is to identify several areas that seem to
be undergoing significant shifts and impacting human
experience most profoundly at this time in history. We seek to
contribute to an awareness of how we stay grounded in our
fundamental professional values while the ground shifts
beneath our feet. These values include a belief that it is better
to be governed by freedom based on self-awareness, than by
passivity and fear.
We have selected three important areas for exploration with
themes that we hope will enhance our grasp of who and what we
are and are becoming. We welcome you to join us in this effort.
