We would like to invite all postgraduate students of medieval studies to ‘Power in the Middle Ages’ an interdisciplinary medievalists’ conference from the 7th to the 9th of November at the Moore Institute, NUI, Galway. This conference will deal with all areas of medieval studies including language, literature, art, archaeology and philosophy, and hopes to bring together delegates from a diverse range of disciplines. This conference aims to explore concepts of power which emerged or were present within the middle ages (500-1500). We would encourage potential delegates to view the theme as a broad suggestion rather than in any way restrictive.

Papers might deal with but are not limited to such topics as:
• political power and class divisions;
• issues surrounding gender;
• the growth of secular knowledge in the form of universities,
• the dissemination and censorship of such knowledge;
• religion;
• heresy;
• commerce and economics;
• physical prowess;
• the place of marginal groups within medieval society.

Abstracts of 300 words for a 20 minute paper (with ten minutes allowed for questions and discussion) should be sent by Friday the 5th of September, either electronically to info@medievalpower.com or by post to Power in the Middle Ages, English Department, NUIG, University Road, Galway, Ireland. Further information can be found at the conference website, www.medievalpower.com
