ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The Periyar University was established by the act No. 45 of Government of Tamilnadu in the year 1997. The University is named after a great social reformer popularly called Thanthai Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. He fought for the cause of protecting and promoting the interest of the oppressed and the downtrodden in India, especially in Tamilnadu. One of his missions was to provide equal opportunity for all including the oppressed and the downtrodden in education and employment. The University has been accredited with B+ status by NAAC and it is one among those recognized by University Grants Commission for receiving grants as per section 12B of UGC act. The University is situated on the Bangalore highways 10 Kms away from the Salem city. The University campus spread over an area of 100 acres.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 2002. Right from its inception, the Department has striven to set high standards of teaching, research and extension work. The Department has succeeded in this endeavor and over the years, it has produced highly qualified and motivated Computer Scientists and
Software Engineers to provide leadership in Educational Institutions,
R and D organizations and Software Industries. The Department of Computer Science is organizing research workshops and National Seminars regularly.
The Department of Computer Science offers three year Postgraduate Programme M. C. A. under CBCS and research programmes M. Phil and Ph. D. The frontier research areas of the department are Data mining, Image Processing, Web mining, Soft Computing, Pattern Recognition and Mobile Computing.
THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
Pattern Recognition is the study of how machines can observe the environment, learn to distingusish patterns. Pattern Recognition techniques find applications in many areas: Machine learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Scientific applications etc. In Madicine and Biological systems, pattern recognition can be used in counting of blood cells, tumor detection in Rx images, tissues characterization from ultra-sound, ECG interpretation and medical diagnosis. In voice recognition systems, pattern recognition techniques can be used for finger print, face recognition and keystroke dynamics. In scientific applications, Pattern Recognition can be used for interpretation of seismic waves for earthquake prediction and analysis of molecular composition.
Pattern Recognition research includes traditional and advanced learning procedures in pattern recognition and neural networks, statistical pattern recognition, machine learning and applications. It focuses on problem related to automatic learning from observations of real world objects and phenomena. Pattern Recognition is the research area that studies the operation and design of systems that recognize patterns in data. It encolses sub disciplines like discriminant analysis, feature extraction, error estimation, cluster analysis, grammatical inference and parsing. Important application areas are image analysis, character recognition, speech analysis, man and machine diagnostics, person identification and industrial inspection.
The National Seminar on Pattern Recognition (NSPR-2008) will provide an excellent oppertunity to present your latest research in pattern recognition and its related techniques. It will provide invaluable oppertunities for academia, scientists and industry professionals to interact with each other and share experiences. This seminar will take the perspective of the research and focus on the emerging trends in Image Processing, Data Mining, Mobile Computing and Soft Computing Technologies.
