Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are their backbone of success and development. In India, 40 percent of employment is generated by SMEs, 35 percent of GDP is contributed by SMEs and 40 percent of export earnings come from SMEs. There is a very sound entrepreneurship support system in India having three tiers namely, national, state, and district levels. Teaching and training of entrepreneurship in institutions and entrepreneurship development programmes (EDPs) are being encouraged by the Government policies at union and state levels.

Policy makers have come up with innovative and liberal entrepreneurship promotion schemes and facilities for the new brand of the first generation entrepreneurs. Education policy 1986, clearly states that a significant percentage of student passing out from technical institutions must be encouraged and diverted to set up their own Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Women entrepreneurship is being promoted aggressively and about 20 percent enterprises in India are belonging to women entrepreneurs. Many research scholars are opting for research on entrepreneurship with amazingly significant results. Many more academicians are undertaking research projects on the subject of entrepreneurship and come out with interesting findings. World over international researches, seminars, conferences, symposiums and conventions are being organized to take stock of entrepreneurship development in different countries. Books, magazines and research journals on entrepreneurship are being published not only in India but in different countries all over the world. National and international professionals associations and councils of entrepreneurs are being set-up to provide membership to those interested and engaged in the movement of promoting entrepreneurship. Therefore, all this speaks of the overwhelming significance of the world of entrepreneurs and the direction it is heading towards. We, all policy makers, researchers, administrators, academics, and entrepreneurs must join hands to spearhead this movement of entrepreneurship for prosperity and growth of our country. The present national conference is a leapfrogging step in this direction
