The symposium will feature discussions on how the amendment came to be; how the early cases of the court are being used today by the U.S. Supreme Courts and other courts; what the Court’s first three cases tell us about the amendment and the court; what drafting choices the 39th Congress made and why; how Section 3 of the amendment was used and what the potential is for continuing use; and how the citizenship clause changed African-American discourse.
