- Main lecturer: Professor Dr. Daniel Y. C. Fung (Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, USA): Sampling and sample preparation of solid and liquid foods; surfaces; and air. Miniaturization. Diagnostic kits. Methods for viable cell counts: hydrophobic grid, spiral plating, flow cytometry, direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT). Methods for viable cell counts, based on electric impedance, conductance and capacitance; bioluminiscence (ATP analysis); and colorimetry. Brief profile of Dr. D. Y. C. Fung ( Professor of food science in the Department of Animal sciences and industry at Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS, USA). Especialized in food microbiology, and with an international reputation as a lecturer on rapid and miniaturized methods and automation. He has more than 800 publications in scientific journals, books and proceedings. Director of the annual international workshop on Rapid methods and automation in microbiology, which is held in Manhattan, KS and has reached the 28th edition. Recipient of the 1997 International Award given by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), because of the uniqueness of this workshop series; the 2006 IFT Carl R. Fellers Award, for a distinguished career in Food science and technology; and the 2007 Inaugural Outstanding Educator in Food Safety Award given by Food Safety magazine and ConAgra Foods Inc, for his teaching career. Distinguished Professor of Veterinary College at UAB since 2006. Senior associate editor of Journal of Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology.
