Unprecedented growth and development in the recent years have enormously raised the standards of living but have also caused significant impacts on environment, thereby necessitating redefining and assessing key indicators of quality of life in totality. Sustainable development has undoubtedly become the most inevitable and yet most challenging issue in the 21st century that could address the problems of global warming, energy, depleting natural resources, degrading ecosystems, fresh water shortages, sanitation and health risks. From conventional fuel-based economy leading to emissions of greenhouse gases, there is a compelling need to move towards minimal carbon economy with greater energy efficiency and clean development mechanisms. There is need to stop simplification of ecosystems and conserve maximum biodiversity. In the recent past we have witnessed such changes in environmental trends, the world over, which are focused on achievement of goals of sustainability. Scientists, policy makers, planners and corporate sectors are now looking forward to sustainable cities with carbon- constrained future strategies, sustainable ecosystem management, sustainable energy alternatives and sustainable food production. For this effective legislation and societal transformation along with creation of environmental values are needed.
The international conference on Changing Environmental Trends and Sustainable Development (CETAS-2009) is being organized by the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, G. J.
