The latest national census shows that our population is aging and that more adults are surviving into old age. Moreover, the number of elderly persons with dementia and psychiatric disorders is anticipated to nearly quadruple by 2030. Consequently, health providers find themselves caring for larger number of older persons with increasingly complex medical and psychiatric problems. This conference is designed for psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and other health professionals who are interested in geriatric psychiatry. Topics include dementia, medical issues, long-term care, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, depression, pharmacology and psychopathology (including psychosis). The goal of the conference is to provide up-to-date, clinically relevant information to assist you in delivering quality care for the older person.
This year’s keynote speaker, Jeff Cummings, M.D., is a world renowned expert in Alzheimer's Disease. He has authored or edited 30 books and published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, and he has received numerous awards for his research in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s Disease. His keynote address will bring us all up to date on the newest approaches to treating dementia.
New this year are two optional workshops. One workshop will provide the rationale, background, development, and application of Mindfulness therapy, which is receiving increasing interest as an approach for the prevention and management of depression in older adults. The other workshop is an Introduction to Neuropsychological Assessment: Beyond the MMSE. The title says it all! This workshop is designed to help the attendee understand when to request neuropsychological tests, how to interpret the results and what to do with the results.
This conference is specifically designed to provide in-depth knowledge for the sub-specialty of geriatric psychiatry. We have also organized the conference so that California psychologists will be able to meet their CE requirement for both Aging and Long-Term Care and for Legal and Ethical Issues. We hope to see you in February 2009, a beautiful time of year in San Diego, for this highly instructive and exciting exchange of ideas.
