Description Newly-announced steelmaking projects in Mexico are aligning the country with other major players in the world steel market. Greenfield and brownfield investments will be lifting not only Mexico’s crude steel capacity, but also its output of rolled and coated products.

ArcelorMittal, Techint Group and Gerdau are leading investments there, but local groups such as AHMSA and Industrias CH are also expanding. The country remains a net importer of steel, which gives it the potential to grow further. Techint, through Ternium and Tenaris, is to invest alone around US$6bn in Mexico - but total investments for the next five years account more than US$10bn.

Moreover, the proximity to the US market adds another driver to the equation – in spite of the current economic crisis, Mexican companies are still exporting to USA. In the next few years, the question will be whether the Mexican steelmaking sector will take advantage of changing circumstances – in particular more manufacturing companies being re-located to Mexico, in order to offset higher costs elsewhere.
