Description THE CONFERENCE

Rapid economic development in Asia over the last decades has elevated numerous developing nations towards the status of New Industrialised Countries. This development was achieved at a considerable expense to the environment.Although much effort has gone into controlling air and water pollution in Asian countries, the pollution of soil and groundwater has been given little attention. For many Asian countries land availability in the past has not been a majorproblem, thus the “nomadic practice” of using, developing or even contaminating one location and moving to another was tolerable. However,as land is now fast becoming inadequate in many countries, the need to recycle these lands, commonly referred to as brownfields, has now emerged.Economically brownfields contribute to the decline of the surrounding neighborhood, thereby creating a distressed area.
As public awareness in Asia on risk and hazards associated with brownfields increases, authorities are now forced to take measures to not only to manage these brownfields, but also to formulate policies and strategies on the redevelopment of such lands.
Brownfield Asia 2008 follows the success of the first two international conferences in this series in 2004 and 2006.
