| Description |
The 10th Workshop on the Genetics and Physiology of Acid- and Solvent-producing Clostridia continues the tradition of scientific meetings that take place every two years. Scientists from all over the world come together to exchange their knowledge on these industrially interesting organisms.
The acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation of Clostridium acetobutylicum and related species, pioneered by Chaim Weizmann, stood out as an example of the industrial success of biological fermentations during the first half of the 20th Century, but has declined following the transition to petrochemistry. Recently, interest in this fermentation has surged due to the increased demand for biofuels.Application of butanol in the transport sector means an important expansion of the biofuels field, with the specific advantage that cheap, ligno-cellulose-type raw materials can be used as a primary source of energy.
This 10th Workshop will provide a forum for exchange of fundamental knowledge and industrial demands to facilitate the launching of a new ABE fermentation to contribute to climate protection.
