This event is a forum for environmental design educators, students, and practitioners from around the world concerned for the future of architectural education. It has a specific focus: The design of open-ended yet sustainable physical environments. The conference / workshop will have paper sessions, exhibits of student and professional work focused on the conference theme, and selected real-time DESIGN EXERCISES that will serve as a platform for discussions.
The Education for an Open Architecture Conference will be held October 19-22, 2008 at Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA.

The conference will be a forum with parallel paper sessions, exhibits of student and professional work focused on the conference theme, and DESIGN EXERCISES "running" parallel to the paper sessions. See "What is Open Architecture" for further description of the conference theme and the concept of design exercises.

CALL FOR PAPERS + PROJECTS
This announcement calls for the submission and peer review of papers of three kinds: (A) teaching efforts congruent with the conference theme, (B) proposals for DESIGN EXERCISES to be run at the conference with students at Ball State or visiting students, and (C) papers discussing work in practice congruent with the conference theme, from which lessons are drawn for teaching and research in the academy.
In addition, we invite: (D) exemplary student design projects aligned with the conference/workshop theme and (E) exemplary built work aligned with the conference/workshop theme.

STUDENT COMPETITION INFORMATION (UPDATED FREQUENTLY)
We are pleased to announce an international student competition to accompany this conference.
The competition provides a unique opportunity for future architects to challenge conventional approaches to design, and to investigate and develop new concepts for an open and sustainable architecture for the 21st century.
This is an open competition with limited restrictions.
We are asking that individual students, student groups, and studio instructors forward an e-mail to openarch@bsu.edu to indicate their intent to place an entry in the competition.
Please provide this e-mail before March 1st if you will be joining the competition.
