| Description |
Signalling and Control Systems have developed significantly over the past decade with processor-based solutions now widespread in all aspects of modern mainline, heavy metro and light rail applications. Investment in railways is targeted to provide increased train service capacity in combination with higher levels of safety. Railway signal and control systems have a major part to play in these plans. However, the railway industry continues to change, both organisationally in its regulation and technically with projects such as the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Britain.
It is vital that engineers are able to understand the fundamental design and assurance requirements of modern safety signalling and control systems as well as the acceptance or regulatory regimes in place. In system applications, the role of the human must be analysed in the context of the railway service to be operated and appropriate levels of system integration provided. Engineers must also understand the need for maintenance and the life-cycle of the systems used on the railway.
System applications and integration are considered in the context of mainline and metro-type environments. The design and project engineering skills necessary are presented through to the integration lessons learnt in the areas of Electro-magnetic compatibility and Human Factors.
