The Patterns of Corruption in the 21st Century

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES AND RATIONALE:
Corruption is a major social, political and economic phenomenon. It is defined as behavior which deviates from the formal rules of conduct governing the actions of someone in a position of public authority because of private-regarding motives such as wealth, power or status. On the economic side, corruption has been identified as one of the consequences of excessive state intervention and the bureaucratic rents created thereby; on the political side, it has been seen as a consequence of the unaccountable monopoly power of various kinds of authoritarian or totalitarian regimes. However, democratic systems also provide incentives and opportunities for corrupt behavior, notably the enormous costs of mounting election campaigns, the capture of political parties by economic elites, and the politization of the state apparatus by elected officials and the desire of the latter to compensate for political uncertainty by building up a capital stake through corruption. In all cases corruption plays different roles at different stages of development and institutionalization.
The scope of this conference will be to analyze the existence of economic, societal and institutional checks and restraints on corrupt behavior in the 21st Century.
A Call for Papers is now open for papers proposals along the following questions:
How extensive is the problem of corruption?
What are the principal causes and costs of corruption?
Which forms of corruption are worse?
What is being done, and what else could be done regarding the good governance?
How should policy effectiveness be assessed over the next years?

The organizers intend to publish a number of selected Conference’s papers in a special edited volume, while other papers will be published in a scientific journal as a special issue after scholarly peer reviewed.

Calls for papers in now open for anyone interested in the above. A synopsis/abstract of about 250-350 words should be sent by 9 of June 2008. It should include: the paper argument, its theoretical approach, its findings and its methodology. All synopsis/abstracts must also include: the author(s)’ last and first names, affiliation and position, address, telephone and fax, as well as necessarily their email address.
Selected applicants will be informed by 16 of June 2008 so that they can complete their papers accordingly. The written papers must be sent by 1 September 2008 (in English). The Programme Committee might confirm acceptance of submissions before the deadline. Therefore, early submission is recommended.
All papers must be original contributions (not already published or submitted to other conferences or journals/books).

CONFERENCE FEE AND PAYMENT
The conference fee is € 130 (euro). For Ph. D candidates the fee is €50. The fee is inclusive of refreshments, documentation, two lunches and one dinner. The conference fee is payable in advance and should be received no later than on 1 September 2008. After that date the registration fee is € 200 and for Ph. D candidates €90.
