On behalf of the SLA-AGC, we would like to invite you to attend the SLA-AGC 14th Annual Conference, which will take place in Doha Qatar on 15th – 17th April 2008. Hosted by Qatar University, this conference is the largest regional gathering of academic staff, researchers and Librarians.

The conference theme this year is:


"Achieving Quality in Libraries and Information Services:

The SLA-AGC is also organizing two Pre-conference workshops:

- Negotiating Licenses for Databases and Digital Resources

- Heritage: Preservation & Access



The goal of this conference is to discuss and to make recommendations on the following themes:

1. Library performance measurement (Performance criteria and indicators)
2. Measuring the quality of information resources and services
3. Measurement indicators in the digital environment
4. Effectiveness of staff professional development and training
5. New approaches in LIS education and research
6. Enhancing the leading role of information specialists in the digital environment
7. Evidence based Librarianship

Workshop 1: Negotiating Licences for Databases and Digital Resources

As front line gatekeepers at the cutting edge of the digital revolution, librarians control how information is purchased, stored, and accessed. Complex laws and fast-changing practices in digital content licensing mean that every agreement starts from scratch, even as the availability of digital materials in libraries increase exponentially.

The workshop will guide participants in a logical manner through the stages of negotiation, from initial awareness needed to determine organizational needs, to making the contract more understandable, to offering advice on negotiation skills and techniques, whether in written or verbal scenarios.

Worshop2: Heritage: preservation & Access

Memory institutions such as libraries, archives, galleries, and museums each share concerns about preserving heritage, particularly with the use of digitally-born material. The ability to manage a wide range of traditional and new media formats creates a challenging environment for institutions. This workshop will deal with some of the crucial issues concerning heritage preservation and access from a digital perspective.

Key areas covered include:



Conservation, treatment, and restoration of heritage objects (theory + Lab)
Standards for electronic handling and access of manuscripts.
Techniques associated with the creation of a manuscript database in terms of digitization and the conservation methods.
Jumaa Al Majed Centre for Culture and Heritage’s experience in the digitization of heritage objects.
Cataloging heritage objects in the electronic environment.

Who would benefit from attending this workshop?

1. Director of Libraries and Information centers
2. Staff responsible for preservation and Access of Media and Archival materials
3. Library & Information Center staff

Prerequisites:

Knowledge in handling manuscripts or archival materials.
