Description Welcome Message

Dear participants of ICSM 2008

The Universidade Federal de Pernambuco is honored to be your host for the 2008 edition of the International Conference on the Science and Technology of Synthetic Metals and warmly welcomes all of you to Recife and Porto de Galinhas, where the meeting will take place.
We are preparing a high quality scientific program with a series of well-renowned international invited speakers that could discuss the most significant recent advances in the several areas that compose the generic field of synthetic metals.
We call your special attention to the opening ceremony, on the evening of the Sunday, July 6, and to the Alan MacDiarmid Memorial Session, in honor of our recently deceased Nobel laureate, which will open the regular sessions of the meeting. During all week, physicists, chemists, biologists, and members of the materials scientists and engineers community working in the general area of organic conductors, polymeric and molecular materials will have the opportunity to meet in a very enjoyable setting and share their knowledge with all participants.
Topics as molecular and nanoelectronics, spintronics and organic magnetism, polymeric materials for energy storage and conversion, and biomolecular interface will be highly placed in the agenda. We thank specially the plenary, keynote and invited speakers and all participants that will help us to make this an exciting event in the tradition of previous ICSM held in Siofolk (1976), New York (1977), Dubrovnik (1978), Helsingor (1980), Boulder (1981), Les Arcs (1982), Abano Terme (1984), Kyoto (1986), Santa Fe (1988), Tubingen (1990), Goteborg (1992), Seoul (1994), Snowbird (1996), Montpellier (1998), Bad Gastein (2000), Shanghai (2002), Wollogong (2004) and Dublin (2006).
Recife and neighboring cities have to offer the natural beauty of our sun bathed tropical beaches, and the unique flavor of a modern society that still preserves the memory of Portuguese and Dutch colonial times. And, above all, visitors will find a warm-hearted people, who, with genuine cordiality, will freely share the secrets of our culture and local cuisine.
As a consequence of the remarkable growth that the Brazilian science has experienced in the last few decades, our Country has now a burgeoning presence as a producer of science in the world. This is reflected not only in the fast-growing number of papers published each year by Brazilian scientists but also by the increasing international excellence of the research groups in our scientific and technological institutions. I am confident that you will take the opportunity and find time to visit some of them, not only here at Recife, but also in different parts of Brazil and in the rest of Latin America, and discuss scientific matters of common interest.
I am sure that you will have a thrilling scientific and personal experience during your visit to Brazil in July 2008. We look forward for the opportunity to offer you a warm welcome and make sure you enjoy your stay with us.

Best regards,
Prof. Celso P. de Melo
Additional Information Special Alan G. MacDiarmid Memorial Session, July 07, with the confirmed presences of Prof. Alan J. Heeger and Prof. Hideki Shirakawa, 2000 Nobel winners.
