Description Manufacturing in China
More and more companies are deciding to manufacture or source production in China in order to:

- supply the Chinese market
- reduce costs for current markets
- follow customers who have already relocated

Companies planning to set up production there need to keep in touch with the developments that are taking place. The manufacturing environment in China is changing constantly as the supply base develops and as the government introduces legislation to attract further investment. In fact, talking of China as a whole is too simplistic; there are major differences between the various parts of China which must be taken into account when deciding how to make such a move.

The workshop
This workshop allows delegates to learn from each other’s experiences and to hear the latest research from the University and organisations with an interest in China.

It will focus on case studies by companies with experience of China. In addition, there will be presentations about three recent study missions relating to China:

- an investigation conducted by the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) as part of its contribution to Lord Sainsbury’s 2007 Review of Science and Innovation.
- results from a follow-up study by the IfM in early 2008, sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, on the development of value chains in three sectors in China (Telecoms, Consumer Electronics, and Pharma) and their implications for UK industry
- a study tour of China in April 2008 involving some 25 IfM Masters students and their observations on how China’s manufacturing sector is managing globalization
At the end of the workshop there will be an open forum discussion to allow some of the key themes to be discussed in greater depth.
