OVERVIEW AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In higher education, assessment is gradually being accepted as a way we do business. This has always not been the case. Pressures from the public and requirements to document institutional effectiveness are some of the forces that have brought us to this point. It is a good thing that institutions are waking up the clarion call to provide solid evidence of student learning outcomes. However, even in this standards-driven era, many new assessment professionals and program faculty, especially in minority institutions; do not have the affiliation or the opportunity to develop the skills needed to fulfill their assessment responsibilities.
As minority institutions grapple to understand the larger implications of the need to forge campus wide assessment cultures and meet assessment mandates, it has become necessary to provide rigorous training and professional development opportunities that prepare individuals to lead these institutions in effectively implementing the much needed systematic assessment systems. Unfortunately, not many such opportunities currently exist that are available to support these institutions.
The Assessment Training and Research Institute aims to streamline a professional development agenda that will provide continuous support to institutional personnel from minority institutions, who desire to retrain or to newcomers desirous of hands-on training to get up to speed in installing a systematic assessment system.
Participants of the ATARI will be guided through each step of the F.A.M.O.U.S. approach and the provided hands-on experiences will give them the confidence necessary to implement and manage successful assessment systems.
Participants will:
• Enhance their skills to provide effective leadership in installing an assessment system.
• Gain a thorough understanding of the F.A.M.O.U.S. assessment approach.
• Use the F.A.M.O.U.S. approach to implement an effective assessment system in any environment.
• Be equipped to conduct assessment workshops on their campuses.
• Facilitate the development or revision of existing institutional assessment plans.
• Submit research proposals for the annual conference.
• Be motivated to continuous personal development.
