Description Upon completion of the program, attendees should be
able to:
Clinicians
• Recognize state-of-the-art advances in the practice of pediatric
and adult sleep medicine for 2008.
• Summarize unique considerations in the clinical management
of sleep disorders in infants, children and adolescents.
• Analyze clinical advantages and disadvantages of new
protocols and technology in the evaluation of obstructive
apnea.
Sleep Technologists and Therapists
• List attributes of sleep pathology related to the nervous,
pulmonary and circulatory systems that influence the
recording and interpretation of the polysomnogram.
• Compare and contrast special features, limitations and
advantages of digital amplifiers, airflow monitors, effort
monitors and artifact recognition, as well as their effect on
the quality of the polysomnogram.
• Describe changes for staging and scoring adult and
pediatric/infant polysomnograms including overnight, MSLT
and MWT studies.
• Describe protocols for CPAP/Bi-level titration for OSA and
VPAP titration for complex sleep apnea.
• Outline the direction and progress of the AAST and BRPT in
licensure, credentialing and education.
• Illustrate basic set-up protocols in the sleep center.
• Describe the AASM recommendations for Portable Home Sleep Testing.
Primary Care Providers
• Discuss interrelationships between sleep disorders, obesity and
pulmonary hypertension and the current diagnostic and
treatment dilemmas in their management.
• Review advances in surgical and dental options used to treat
obstructive apnea.
• Distinguish presentation and management of sleep disorders
in aging, neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease.
• Describe evaluation and treatment options for hypersomnia
and narcolepsy including current recommendations for using
and interpreting the MSLT and MWT.
• Make recommendations for the management of
neuromuscular disease and hypoventilation during sleep.
• Explain incidence and treatment options for OSA in
craniofacial anomalies and the outcomes from surgery of the
upper airway in children.
• Diagnose and treat movement disorders during sleep.
• Report issues in the management of disorders in initiating and
maintaining sleep including insomnia and circadian rhythm
