Description BACKGROUND

Man’s welfare is materially affected a lot by insects, diseases & weeds, which causes heavy loss to our crops and are harmful in many other ways. A number of methods have been used to combat insect pests, diseases & weeds with varying degrees of success but among all chemical pesticides are being widely used. Similarly, chemical fertilizers are being used widely to grow our crops for higher production with lot of health problem.

The indiscriminate use of these chemical pesticides and chemical fertilizers has resuited in serious damages to non-target animals including human being by seriously affecting our environment. Besides, these chemical pesticides, causes killing of natural enemies, develop resistance problem among insects to insecticides, high residue hazards, upsetting of balance in nature. This has necessitated
looking for a fresh approach towards pest management, nutrition management and also safeguarding the ecological balance.
Thus, role of eco-friendly approaches in Agriculture and Horticulture has assumed greater practical importance with the current thrust on environmental sustainability and organic farming. The low input sustainable Agriculture and Horticulture with chemical pesticides, bioagents and biofertilizers in front line. The demonstration of wide spectrum activity and divergent effect of bio-pesticides, bio-agent and bio-fertilizers has shown a new vista for sustainable Agriculture and Horticulture production for higher acceptability and value of produce for exports and suitability for rural areas, though their adoption by farmers is still in infancy.
Research and development on bio- pesticides, bio-agents, bio-fertilizers and other eco-friendly components in the region is very slow. This is due to the lack of expertise, low funding availability mainly from the public s4ector and the lack of involvement of multidisciplinary expertise need to develop these components from start to finish.
Application technologies need to be refined to target, well planned and well executed field demonstration with follow up shall enhance the satisfaction of the end-user former.
Keeping the above in view, the “National Conference on Eco-friendly Approaches in sustainable Agriculture and Horticulture Production” is proposed.
