Conference Theme: Investing in Our Children

Mission Statement: The mission of the Worthy Institute Children’s Obesity Conference is to promote the need for a comprehensive approach in addressing obesity related risk factors that exist among children and adolescents across the State of Arizona.

Goals:

• Share information that aims to improve the overall health of youth through education and information that promotes healthy lifestyles.

• Promote comprehensive systems and collaborate partnerships among health professionals that service youth.

• Describe health disparities that exist related to childhood obesity that impact the community and health related services.

• Highlight existing resources across Arizona that address risks related to childhood obesity.

Who Should Attend?
The Children’s Obesity Conference intends to draw over 200 professionals who work daily on children’s health issues, including healthcare providers such as physicians, social workers, nutritionists, dietitians, school nurses, psychologists and counselors, public health professionals, and policy makers. In addition, attendees will include parents, researchers, media representatives, business and civic leaders, parks and recreation personnel, K-12 and early childhood education representatives, food service personnel, physical education teachers, nutrition educators, teachers, and child care providers, as well as youth organizations and after-school programs. The conference will attract significant resources and professionals that will support the community in making an impact on the problems associated with childhood obesity across the state of Arizona.







Conference Tracks


Track 1. The Influence of Policy and Environment on Childhood Obesity
This track will address the impact of Public Policy on childhood obesity, including strategies for increasing physical activity and improving diet and nutrition. Organizational practices that create healthy environments for children will be explored and discussed. Focus around the challenge in funding programs that address childhood obesity will also be examined.

Track 2. Education Training and Research:
With the current data and education and training available, how do we use existing resources to improve our professional role in reinforcing healthy behaviors among children and adolescents? This track will examine local and national public health statistics on relevant health disparities, as well as the latest research and findings on the childhood obesity epidemic. Successful programs that have been evaluated and data collection tools and protocols utilized will also be discussed.

Track 3. Importance of Partnerships and Role of Community, Schools and Family in Addressing Needs of Children at Risk for Obesity.
Track three will address effective ways that various communities including schools and families can work together to achieve common objectives. Workshops under this track will discuss effective partnerships among community organizations and strategies to establishing successful collaborative partnerships and initiatives. A discussion on the role of the family will be offered as well as an examination of social factors that exist within families that can create barriers to healthy lifestyles.

Track 4. Effective Program Planning, Implementation and Development of Programs that Address Childhood Obesity:
Evidence based and promising strategies for addressing childhood obesity through prevention and intervention programming will be introduced and discussed. Information will also include topics related to inequities that exist within services and programs and the impact of cultural competency in reducing these differences. Successful strategies for improving program participation and eliminating program barriers will also be included.
