Because energy and environmental issues transcend boundaries, global goals and targets can be useful to provide guidance on the priority national and regional issues to be addressed and therefore, International co-operation in energy and environment is needed more than ever in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
Initiatives are needed to strengthen international co-operation in order to mobilize investments in energy and environmental management for sustainable development. Being a technical university with diversity of technical and science disciplines, the Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU) is initiating and organizing the 2nd international conference on Energy and Environmental Protection that is going to address several relevant issues by local, regional and international experts and scientists. The 2nd international conference, which is going to be organized in cooperation with both the Energy Authority and the Environmental Quality Authority, would represent an opportunity for national and international experts and scientists in addition to national decision makers to interact aiming at enhancing the United Nations initiative (WEHAB) . The conference is expected to commence over three days with participants from local and international institutions in addition to invited international keynote speakers.
The PPU has previously organized and run several initiatives tackling both environment and energy issues. It has organized the First Palestinian Environmental Symposium during 22-23 March 2000 in cooperation with the Environmental Quality Authority, and the 1st International Conference on:"Energy and Environment Protection in Sustainable Development". Both events were co-sponsored by the Heinrich Boel Foundation (HBF). The university has also implemented two social mobilizing programs in the fields of environment, culture and education. Both programs were funded by the UNDP and implemented by the Renewable Energy and Environmental Research Unit (REERU) at the PPU. In addition, the university has participated in the multilateral cooperative program: "Enhancing Environmental Sustainability through Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Technology" with the American University of Beirut, the Jordan University of Science and Technology, the University of Central Florida and the Northwest Energy Education Institute of the University of Oregon. The project was funded through the US-Citizen Exchange Program of the US- Department of Energy.
Later in 2007, the first International Conference on Energy and Environmental Protection took place in Hebron over two full days 8-10, May, 2007 with participation from national and international scientists who addressed many important issues on energy and environment. Participants from Europe, USA, and the region and from Palestine have all recommended holding the conference on biannual term as the topics are so important on global scale. The conference proceedings were published with definite ISBN (978-9950-8500-6-4) and been distributed to relevant institutes. The feedback was encouraging and the proceedings were referred to in several scientific publications.
Today, while we are witnessing the steady and rapid increase in conventional energy sources and the impact of that increase on the prices of all goods and on the living expenses we realize that there is a need for the scientific community to discuss the crucial issues and to suggest solutions for mitigating the adverse impacts that have recently appeared. It is therefore, the proper time to hold the 2nd conference and to address the emerged issues and to call international, regional and national scientists, researchers, decision makers and relevant stakeholders to meet on the conference “platform” to discuss these issues and to recommend solutions.

The objectives of the conference are:
1. To bring together scholars, scientists, experts and researchers, decision makers, and other stakeholders from private sectors in one platform to discuss issues related to energy and environmental protections in the sustainable development.
2. To introduce the latest advancement in the two fields.
3. To propose crosscutting issues relevant to both main topics that might also be added in order to integrate social, health and economics of the Sustainable development.
4. To strengthen and enhance the reliability and availability of information and experience exchange on advanced and efficient technologies in both energy and environmental management issues.
5. To emphasize the issue of harnessing alternative energy resources, including renewable, to the domestic and commercial needs.
6. To strengthen regional and international cooperation in fields of global concerns.
