In an effort to promote transparency in the relationship between pharmaceutical manufacturers and health care providers, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) released its revised Code on Interactions with Healthcare Providers, taking effect in January 2009. Although this code is voluntary, most pharmaceutical companies have publicly stated a commitment to comply. Two major changes resulting from the Code are that sales reps can no longer distribute non-educational items, or “tchotskies” at doctors' offices and they can no longer take physicians out to dinner.
