A sizeable minority of human behavior or lifestyle variations, such as autism, sexual orientation, and certain types of addiction, have been associated with non conducive social or environment leading to personal stigmatization or various degree of discrimination. Recent development in medical science and molecular genetics has revealed interesting insights on the general biology, physiology, and genetic basis of human variation. In addition, the completion of human genome sequencing and molecular genetic analysis has shed light on our knowledge in these complex phenomena. Moreover, many reports on advances of metagenomic study of human microbiome have demonstrated that autism, obesity, and even heart diseases could be initiated by microorganism.
Our deeper knowledge in these aspects would enlighten us on the nature of biodiversity in human being and the life itself. This will lead us to greater understanding on certain types of human variations and finding better treatment for certain types of “socially unacceptable variation or disorder.”
Based on the above reasons, Atma Jaya has endorsed an initiative to conduct a multidisciplinary conference to present recent progress on our understanding of human variation minority that is associated with psychology and genetics. This conference will be organized by our three faculties, i.e. Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Biotechnology.
