TWO DAYS INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON
THEORIZING SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE “SBD09”

Based on the current demand for sustainable design professionals and the future need for environmentally sustainable education in Pakistan & UK, a collaborative post-graduate program; Masters of Architecture in “Sustainable Design” is proposed. Sustainable Design Program, Faculty of Architecture, National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan and Edge Hill University, Lancashire, UK has agreed to establish and design this program jointly. Higher Education Commission Pakistan and British Council Pakistan are promoting this program under Joint Higher Education Links Program (JHELP).

The goal of the program is to educate students in the area of Sustainable Architecture Design with an innovative program that is truly unique. This initiative will lead to a master’s degree program starting in 2010.

As part of this initiative the second seminar is being organized at Edgehill University, Ormskirk, Lancashire to advance the concepts for the development of a truly unique curriculum for this Masters program.

CALL FOR PAPERS
This seminar welcomes papers that deal with theories of sustainability from a wide range of perspectives and from a broad spectrum of practitioners within the built environment field to bring these manifold dialogues into negotiation. Through the infusion of different perspectives and competing discourses we wish to celebrate at this seminar the diversity of possible positions and put into question singular answers and solutions. Deeply social perspectives will rub up against more technical approaches.

THEMES:
1. Pedagogy:
More focused papers on pedagogical issues that pertain to questions of theorising sustainability, theory and sustainability are welcome.
2. Practice:
a. Learning Sustainability from Traditional Architecture
b. Architectural Sustainability in the developing world.
c. Sustainable Architecture-Practices
d. Zero Energy Sustainable Buildings- A debate
e. Post Modernity and Sustainable Architecture
3. Technical/Social:
a. Social Dimensions of Sustainable Architecture
b. Environmental Dimensions of Sustainable Architecture
c. Technological Dimensions of Sustainable Architecture

All accepted papers will be published on a proceeding CD-ROM and the refereed accepted papers will be printed in global built environment review and in RPC-NCA Quarterly AKKAS.
