Nuclear power presents a complex and challenging means to generate cost effective energy. As nations are entering the nuclear renaissance, this course will address nuclear operations, regulations, and safety in Europe and worldwide. The symposium examines the development and history of nuclear power and its regulation, current and new technologies in reactor and plant operations, challenges in dealing with low- and high-grade nuclear waste, nuclear fuel transportation, and nuclear plant security and safety. Special emphasis is placed on a detailed analysis of regulatory issues, harmonization throughout Europe, and regulation differences among nations. Attendees will acquire an understanding of the complicated regulatory, operational, economic, and strategic planning environments that shape how decisions are made concerning the future of nuclear power generation. Safety in nuclear power environments is paramount to successful operations and affects everyone. Stakeholders in the safety process include plant employees, management, regulators, first responders, emergency personnel, and the general public. Symposium topics include creating a productive safety culture in nuclear organizations, safety regulatory requirements for all nuclear operations, and the contributions of new technology to nuclear safety. Additionally, specifics dealing with emergency response and preparedness and assessing an organization's safety culture will be addressed. Participants will learn the importance of commitment to establishing a thriving and successful safety culture in the nuclear world.
