Description Picturing America School Collaboration Conferences at the Newberry Library, Chicago, October 23-24, 2009, and April 16-17, 2010.

The Newberry Library will host two conferences to support teachers in the development of lessons using images from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Picturing America program. Our conference theme is “Interpreting the American Landscape.” Conference sessions will explore the role of landscape imagery in shaping national identity. We will use the Newberry Library’s collections as well as a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago and a walking tour of Chicago’s Loop to model ways for teachers to use local resources in their own communities. Conferences will feature presentations by distinguished scholars and sharing of resources in workshop formats.

For more information on these conferences, and to apply to participate, please visit: http://www.newberry.org/scholl/picturingamerica/conferenceinfo.html
The application deadline for the October 2009 conference is June 30, 2009. The application deadline for the April 2010 conference is October 1, 2009.

Teachers who participate will receive a stipend and there are funds available to defray the cost of travel and lodging.

Secondary-level (grades 9 - 12) history, language arts, and art teachers and secondary-level librarians whose schools already have received Picturing America grants are eligible to apply. No more than two participants per school will be accepted.
