Description Workshop on Mathematical Biology and Numerical Analysis

August 01-02, 2009
Georgia Center
University of Georgia
Athens, GA, 30602

This workshop is organized by the UGA Institute of Bioinformatics (IOB) in association with the IMACS World Congress Conference on Computational and Applied Mathematics & Applications in Science and Engineering (http://www.uga.edu/imacs), which will be held at UGA on August 03-05, 2009. NSF has recommended funding to support students and postdocs to participate in this workshop. The objective of this workshop is to give interdisciplinary education, training and research in the mathematical and biological sciences. It will provide the participants with an overview of the necessary mathematical and biological background that are essential for a good number of applications in biological sciences.

The number of funded participants will be between 30 and 40. This is based on the level of funding that NSF will provide. The funds will provide 3 nights lodging (shared rooms), registration which includes two coffee breaks each day, lunch at each day of the workshop and travel expenses up to $325.00. If you are interested, please register by May 21, 2009 at http://taha.cs.uga.edu/workshop09/

Topics to be covered are:
1. Numerical simulations of ecosystems
2. Systems biology of complex traits
3. Analysis of compositional heterogeneity among microbial genomes
4. Functional connectivity and neuronal network dynamics
5. Reconstructing metabolic pathways through network modeling of experimental data
