About the present Congress
Parasitic diseases caused by helminths and protozoa plague billions of people, kill millions annually, and inflict debilitating injuries on additional millions. Attempts to develop drugs or vaccines against these pathogens have been hampered by the difficulty to cultivate them in vitro, the complexity of their multicellular organization and/or multistage development, in addition to their impressive antigenic variability. Globalization has helped in spreading some of the deadliest infectious diseases known to humans by jumping species barriers. Therefore education and research in Parasitology needs a regular rethink on the part of the professionals. Equally important is the percolation of the policies resulting out of the brain storming sessions to the general masses to make them aware of the preventive as well as the therapeutic regimens. A case in point is about bringing down the incidence of guinea worm infection in the endemic areas just by a change in the general hygiene of the affected population. It is also imperative that good resources be thrust into control of vectors in the endemic areas in case of vector-borne parasitic diseases. As a biological discipline, parasitology draws heavily on techniques from fields such as cell biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, evolution and ecology. The deliberations in the Congress will be based on this backdrop and will include talks from subject experts/scientists working in the aforesaid areas and the transfer of technology for the benefit of masses.
The symposium will have following main sections: -
•Physiology, cellular and molecular biochemistry •Taxonomy, ecology, epidemiology and modeling •Diagnosis, pathology, immune response and vaccines •Chemotherapy and drug resistance •Vector biology and control •Host-parasite interactions
