Teyyam is part of native religion of North Kerala, that consists of various rituals, other performances, verbal expressions etc. Once in a year teyyam performance are being conducted in shrines and house holds in which the performer put make-up and costumes of concerned deity and invoke the deity for its appearance in the sword kept on ‘Peetha’. (A kind of wooden stool for ritual purposes). Through series of rituals the ‘Sakti’ of the deity is transferred to the body of the performer and he himself becomes the deity and he is able to console the devotees who approach him with various requests.

Details of the work-shop Duration : 7days, from 18.04.2010 to 24.04.2010 This work-shop is an occasion for experience Teyyam performance in its natural context, discussions; interaction with performance, lectures by eminent scholars in teyyam, visit tour to various important teyyam shrines of North Kerala and one day stay at village house hold etc. Tentative Programme 18.04.10 : Welcome to participants and inauguration of the work-shop 19.04.10 : Projection of documentaries on teyyam, Discussions, stays with a family in village 20th & 21st : Observe Teyyam in its natural context in a shrine at Kannur 22.04.10 : Interaction with artists, ritual persons and officials of shrine. 23.04.10 : Visit to important shrines of teyyam in North Kerala 24.04.10 : Valedictory function Kannur is the District Head-quarters which is on the coast of Arabian sea. It is well connected with rail and road. Nearest air-ports are Calicut and Mangalore (135 Kms. & 148 Kms. respectively) Weather: April is summer season in Kerala and temperature during this month is in between 280C and 380C. Occasional rainfall may be there in the evening. Accommodation: Accommodation of the participants will be arranged in good hotels/resorts in Kannur and any way participants are expected to stay overnight in the field during performance. Food: Traditional Kerala/Continental/Indian food will be arranged in fields/Hotels. Registration Admission restricted to 25 participants.
