IRS Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement, enables tax payers to report the amount of mortgage-related expenses and interest paid on a mortgage during a tax year. These expenses can be used to reduce taxable income and overall amount owed to the IRS by comparing their mortgage interest and income. A new proposal is on the table to allow the IRS to mine 1098 forms in an attempt to catch tax evaders. Additionally variants of Form 1098 allow deductions for certain other expenses include 1098-C (for donations of vehicles, boats and airplanes), 1098-E (for interest paid on qualified student loans), and 1098-T (for tuition and related fees).
