Conference announcement/Call for papers

ICOLACE 2010 is a learning and community development conference that will be held at two levels:
1. A review by students, parents and teachers who participated in the trial programs of Lifewide PROGRESS Reports (http://www.pecascentres.com/LPR.html) and/or PECAS Centres (http://www.pecascentres.com) during 2009/2010.
2. Contributions by academics and practitioners who are involved in innovative programs that promote education for sustainable development (ESD) and lifewide learning especially among school age community members.

Background to conference

At the 2009 UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, held in Bonn, poster presentations were given in relation to:
• Lifewide PROGRESS (Personal Response of Ongoing Growth Regarding Environment, Employability, Society and Self) Reports, and
• PECAS (Planet, Economy, Community And Self) Centres as frameworks to help students consider, plan and review their lifewide learning and become actively engaged in sustainable development awareness and activities. Copies of the associated discussion papers may be viewed at UNESCO discussion paper on LPR and UNESCO discussion paper on PECAS Centres.

During 2009 and 2010, schools are being asked to consider the trial introduction of Lifewide PROGRESS Reports and/or PECAS Centres. ICOLACE 2010 will provide the opportunity for participants to share experiences and review the effectiveness of both models. Key intended outcomes from the conference are revised models for Lifewide PROGRESS Reports and/or PECAS Centres that can be offered to schools and communities as simple, no or low cost, tangible outcomes from the current Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD).

The conference is also open to any academics and practitioners who are involved in research or innovative programs designed to promote ESD and/or lifelong and lifewide learning.
