The goal of this Symposium is to explore human genetic and phenotypic variability in the light of recent developments in genomics, genetics and molecular medicine. The topics covered will include the mechanisms of mutation, normal sequence variation from the DNA to the chromosomal level, functional polymorphism and disease genetics.

Keynote Lectures will be delivered by Svante Pääbo, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and Kári Stefánsson, deCODE genetics.

EMBO and EMBL are collaborating to seize new opportunities offered with the opening of the EMBL Advanced Training Centre (ATC). Following their mission of developing and providing advanced training to their member states, both EMBO and EMBL have established a strong portfolio of state-of-the-art scientific conferences, courses and workshops in Europe.

In order to further promote scientific communication and collaboration in the European research area, a new type of scientific symposia is jointly organised and funded by both organisations.

EMBO | EMBL Symposia, aim to provide the European scientific community with a platform to discuss and exchange ideas on forward-looking topics and new developments in the life sciences.

The focus of these events is set to be complementary to existing programmes promoted by both organisations. Topics should emphasize strategically upcoming developments and interdisciplinarity in all fields of the life-sciences.
