This conference will be very special as it will celebrate the 90th birthday of The Union and marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Robert Koch who was the first person to isolate the tuberculosis bacillus in 1882 and subsequently awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his tuberculosis findings in 1905.
The city of Berlin has undergone enormous changes over the last two decades. Its new, modern and innovative architecture is well-integrated into the revitalized capital city. The theme of the World Conference will greatly benefit from the modern and dynamic spirit of the setting and motivate conference participants to discuss the real progress made in the development of new diagnostics, anti TB drugs and vaccines along with the further advances in HIV care, Lung Health and tobacco control.
Scientific sessions selected for this year’s programme intend to highlight innovation in TB, HIV and lung health, setting a course for future health solutions. As a link from the past to present, and the central role of research, the theme of the conference is “Tuberculosis, HIV and lung health: from research and innovation to solutionsâ€.
The 41st Union World Conference will also provide us all with the opportunity to demonstrate continued commitment to the Year of the Lung, which was launched on Sunday, 6 December 2009, at the 40th Union World Conference in Cancun, Mexico. This campaign, organised by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), seeks to raise awareness that hundreds of millions of people around the world suffer each year from treatable and preventable respiratory diseases.
It is our great honour to invite you to join us to discuss debate and network during this unparalleled gathering in Berlin.
