Objectives of BIBCo:
To improve the earning power of home-based cottage workers in Sarawak
To preserve the Sarawak bead tradition
To encourage the production of top quality beads and beadwork in Sarawak
To promote competent modern design in beads and beadwork
To facilitate creative interaction between Sarawak’s artisans/designers and their international counterparts

Mdm Yekti Kusmartono Jakarta; antique and modern bead jewelry designer Dr. Cheah Hwei Fen Australian National University; internationally recognized expert on Nyonya Beadwork (Penang, Singapore, Malacca) Jamey Allen USA; researcher, lecturer and writer who specialises on antique beads, and on the multi-layered Rosetta beads Ipoi Datan Director, Sarawak Museum; archaeologist, introduces the earliest beads of Borneo Heidi Munan Honorary Curator of Beads, Sarawak Museum; overview of Borneo bead culture as it stands in 21st century Reita Rahim Gerai Orang Asli; social anthropologist, special study of organic materials (seeds etc) used as beads by Malaysia’s aboriginal inhabitants Lim Meng Hong Christies KL; antique beads and collectors Poline Bala UNIMAS (University of Sarawak); sociologist, expert on Orang Ulu and Kelabit cultures Optional Activities after the Conference Post-conference tours to local bead-working communities (longhouse), also the Niah Cave (archaeological beads), and Mulu National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
