Rice University is celebrating the Buckyball's 25th Discovery Day with a commemorative celebration and conference on October 10-14, 2010. The pivotal discovery of the buckyball marks the birth of nanoscience and nanotechnology on Rice's Campus. This discovery resulted in Professors Curl, Kroto and Smalley being awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The Buckyball Discovery Conference will reunite the members of the buckyball research team – Curl, Kroto, Heath, O’Brien – in a special free symposium where they will reminisce about the discovery and provide insight into the future of carbon nanotechnology. Two additional free symposia will feature technical presentations from eight of the world's leading experts in carbon nanotechnology – Avouris, Dai, Hirsch, Geim, Cohen, Dressehaus, Endo, Huffman. The Buckyball Discovery Conference will also feature the TT Chao Symposium on Innovation, the National Historic Chemical Landmark presentation, a keynote lunch presentation from Ray Johnson the Chief Technology Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation and symposia on Nano-Occupational EH&S, Nano-Energy, Corrosion and Aerospace Materials.

The Buckyball Discovery Conference is organized by the Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University (nano.rice.edu) and underwritten by Lockheed Martin Corporation. We invite everyone to come to Rice University for this joyous celebration in October.
