Today, Telecommunications networks are now making it possible for
people in Southern Africa to participate in the world economy; in ways
that were not possible in the past. Following liberalization of the industry,
the number of telecom companies continues to increase from the
monopoly situation of yesteryears. However, the successes recorded so
far have opened several new areas of developmental needs and
challenges in terms of ICT Infrastructure deployment and protection, data
usage, coverage for rural areas, ICT connectivity for development and
strengthening regulatory processes through compliance monitoring and
The Southern Africa Telecommunications Summit 2010 is a gathering of
the telecommunications industry and those with vested interests in its
welfare. It will review SADC'S telecommunications industry, provide
understanding of the dynamics that propel it and will forecast future
trends and expected developments. The two-day summit will focus on
the network expansion, on SADC's ICT growth strategies in addition to
governments' initiatives to stimulate investment and private sector
participation.. The key drivers for sector development and network
expansion, through creation of enabling environment for Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) growth in Southern Africa, will be top
