Description

The political, economical and social developments on the threshold of the 21st century, namely growing globalization, economical crisis, migration patterns, transnationalism, new technologies, beauty industry and body sculpting, as well as the legislative steps taken towards securing human rights and equal opportunities, are signs of emergent new ways of thinking and experiencing subjectivity.

This Colloquium will bring together national and international academics and experts to discuss Gender issues in a diachronic and synchronic perspective. The main goal is to assemble a diversified body of scholarship on this field of studies, which will reflect the experiences and conceptualizations that contributed to promote significant transformations in modern societies, as the outcome of the long fight of Women to overthrow the age-long patriarchal society and the establishment of a full-fledged democratic society, where women are granted an equal voice and an egalitarian political, economic and social existence.

Despite many of the traditional feminist claims having already been fulfilled both in the Law and in the official speeches, this Colloquium further aims to debate and denounce residual forms of resistance still present in speeches, categories and discriminative practices, as well as the configuration of new manifestations of asymmetries in gender relations in this so-called ‘post-feminist’ era.

The International Colloquium “Debating Women: Past and Present” is organised by the University of Madeira in partnership with the following peer institutions:

• State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
• Centre for Classical Studies, University of Lisbon, Portugal
• Centre for Cultural and Communication Studies, Catholic University, Portugal
• Research Centre for Jewish and Feminine Studies, University of Santiago of Compostela, Spain

Please send the Title and Abstract of your contribution (Word format, 300 word max.) to the email address: mulheremdebate@uma.pt, together with the enclosed registration form duly filled in.
