Conference "Quality in Alternative Care", 4-6 April, Prague/Czech Republic

Various care systems exist for children living in alternative care which aim to ensure and improve their chances of development. However, inadequate care can hinder this development and result in children’s fundamental rights being violated. Against this background, SOS Children’s Villages, with the support of various partners, is organising the international conference "Quality in Alternative Care".

The conference aims to identify ways to empower children and young adults, to promote the implementation of quality care standards, to provide a platform and networking opportunities and to identify changes needed to policy and practice to align them with international frameworks.

In order to achieve these objectives the topics of this conference will include:

 Quality management in alternative care (quality standards, monitoring, evaluation, training courses, staff motivation, challenges of financial crisis, etc.)

 Changes in policies and practices in correlation with international documents (CRC, Guidelines, CoE Recommendations, Q4C Standards, etc.)*

 De-institutionalisation processes (status quo, developments, challenges, etc.)

 Special quality requirements (leaving care, care of siblings, child and youth participation, decision-making & admission processes, care of children with special needs, early childhood, emergency relief, etc.)

The target groups of the conference are decision makers, NGOs, carers, youth welfare service providers, researchers and young people with experience of care, among others. In order to set up a level playing field, we will work with the young people over a three-day period in a preparatory meeting prior to the conference.

Key speeches will be translated simultaneously into Czech and some sessions at the conference may also be held in Czech, but the conference language will be English.

The conference will take place at the Clarion Congress Hotel in Prague**** from 4-6 April.
