In Diaghilev’s circle: Impresario in dialogue with composers
International musicological conference

Second International Festival “Diaghilev. P. S.” St Petersburg, 23-29 October 2011

The two-day international conference “In Diaghilev’s circle: Impresario in dialogue with composers” will take place in St Petersburg at the N. Rimsky-Korsakov Memorial Museum-Apartment 24-25 October 2011.

The conference is the part of the Second International Festival “Diaghilev. P. S.”, the mission of which is to bring back the name of Diaghilev, his cultural phenomenon to Russia and enroll Petersburg in international cultural environment using the internationally recognised brand of Diaghilev’s ‘Ballets Russes’. Within the bounds of the festival there will be events that shed a light from various perspectives on the phenomenon of Diaghilev – exhibitions, concerts, performances, editions, conference.

Diaghilev’s impact on the development of world art is still subjected to revision. Only within the last two decades have there been several monographs published, the intention of which was an attempt to summarize, realize and elucidate a scale of Diaghilev’s merit as an impresario, critic, curator of exhibitions, art historian, musician and editor. However in Diaghilev studies many sides remain unknown.

Among there less-explored aspects of Diaghilev there is his role as a producer of genius, and dictatorial impresario for composers. This conference will be concentrated in various aspects of (non)collaboration of Diaghilev with composers, function of Diaghilev as:
• arbiter of musical tastes
• musical critic
• discoverer of composers
• editor of musical works
• co-author

One of the main event of the festival will be a world premiere of oratorio “Orphic Trilogy” by Vernon Duke (Vladimir Dukelsky), performed by the St Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra, Choir of the State Capella. One session of the conference will be focused on the collaboration of Dukelsky with Diaghilev.

The conference’s programme committee consists of: Lidia Ader (Senior researcher of the N. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-Apartment) Nina Kostenko (Head of N. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-Apartment). Natalia Metelitsa (Artistic director of the International festival “Diaghilev. P.S.”, director of the State St Petersburg Museum of Theatre and Music) Katia Sirakanyan (Executive director of the International festival “Diaghilev. P.S.”)

The working languages of the conference are Russian and English. The time-limit for papers is 20 minutes, plus discussion time of 10 minutes. Please submit abstracts for papers of no less than 200 and no more than 300 words together with short CV of 100 words, which have to be sent by e-mail to Lidia Ader (
