The topic will be centred around ion channels and their importance in biology and medicine. The aim of this symposium is to bring the top experts in the field together to present their latest findings to an international audience. True to New Frontiers, a top line-up of speakers in the field has been arranged including Erwin Neher, Nobel laureate 1991 for Medicine/Physiology for his development of the patch-clamp technique. Also Michael Ferrari, Spinoza winner 2009 (Dutch equivalent to Nobel prize) will be presenting a keynote lecture on his latest work on migraine. Excluding these two speakers, 5 out of the top 15 researchers in the ion channel field will be attending (http://www.ionchannels.org/labs.php) verifying a top line-up. Importantly, the speakers will address their work form a mechanistic perfective related to various diseases including diabetes, hypertension, renal diseases, neurological disorders. This fits in our general theme: “Molecular mechanisms of disease”.

This symposium will be of interest to scientists and clinicians of all levels, from students to senior professors. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
