Diabetes 2011 assembles some of the most highly respected professionals in the fields of diabetes, endocrinology, obesity and general practice to discuss current issues and challenges involved in the management of diabetes and its complications.

The new coalition government is embarking on one of the most radical reform programmes that the NHS has ever seen. Their flagship policy of GP-led commissioning with transfer of budgets to groups of practices is proving controversial. Diabetes 2011 will include a discussion on the effect this policy will have on diabetes care from three different perspectives – primary care, secondary care and a private provider.

Other sessions will include:
• The cost of prescribing for diabetes in the UK
• Managing the interface between primary and secondary diabetes care
• Screening for type 2 diabetes in primary care and risk score assessment in ethnic minorities
• Diabetic complications including cardiovascular disease, diabetic nephropathy, depression and cancer
• The management of gestational diabetes and the treatment of pregnant women with type 2 diabetes
• The pathophysiology of obesity and developments in bariatric surgery
