Adaptability and reconfigurability in mechanism design and robots development are the challenges that the kinematicians and roboticians must meet in this new century due to the increasing production demand of small batch, short run, and quick changeover and due to worsening environments and climate, and space exploration. This can be tranced back to 1990s when researchers were generating new ideas and concepts for new machines and reconfigurable robots. This resulted in kinemetatropic linkages, metamorphic mechanisms, and machines with various topology, etc. The new mechanisms have a property of generating different topological configurations for reconfigurability and for various task requirements.

The Second ASME/IFToMM International Conference on Reconfigurable Mechanisms and Robots (ReMAR 2012) is to provide an international forum for presenting and exploring the new mechanisms and robots developed in the past two decades with their new properties in changing the mobility and the topological structure of a mechanism or a robot and for discussing their uses in domestic, hazardous, out-space and manufacturing environments. Conference Venue

ReMAR 2012 will be held at Tianjin University, China, which is the First Modern Chinese University and was established in 1895. Peiyang University - Tianjin University contributes greatly to the Chinese higher education. In its early days, undergraduates had the right to directly pursue graduate study at Harvard or Yale without any entrance exams.

Tianjin is one of four metropolis cities and is 29 minutes away from Beijing by a high-speed-train link. It is an historical city in China with a major harbour and has many European style buildings and streets. As a dual-core city, Tianjin is divided into the old city and the Binhai New Area. It the reason why Rockefeller, Tishman Speyer, Motorola, Airbus and other famous companies build a branch here. For instance, EADS Airbus has already opened an assembly plant for its A320 series airliners, operational since 2009.
