Cancer is a global issue that affects everyone, either directly or indirectly. It is now the leading cause of death in both the developed and developing world. More people die from cancer than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined, and the death toll is set to rise dramatically over the coming decades. It has been predicted that over the next 10 years, as many as 84 million people will die of cancer and more than 70% of them in the developing world. There is therefore an urgent need for collaborating in research to combat this deadly disease. Although there have been a number of exciting recent developments in cancer treatment, more effort is still needed in all areas of basic, translational and clinical research.
Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol has thus deemed it important to organize the 7th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress, with the theme “Cancer: from Basic Research to Cure”, as a forum for presenting the latest developments in all areas of cancer research, including cancer etiology and molecular mechanisms, strategies for cancer prevention, early detection and diagnosis, as well as therapeutic interventions, all of which are crucial in our battle to overcome cancer.
The Congress will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 13 to 17, 2011 to commemorate the seventh cycle (84 years) of the birth of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, an auspicious occasion for the people of Thailand to celebrate and pay tribute to His Majesty the King. This marks a time of national joy and jubilation, which all scientists are invited to share.
