We are currently going through the most radical changes to education since the move to comprehensive education in the 1960’s. The passing of the Academies Act 2010 was a signal of the Government’s intent to give schools which OFSTED rated “Outstanding” or “Good” with outstanding features the opportunity to apply to become an Academy in their own right. To allow them to operate with greater freedoms and independence to innovate and raise standards. Previously, schools without these ratings had to apply as part of wider chains, by linking up and working with stronger schools.

However, many other mainstream and special schools have said they should be allowed to become stand-alone Academies. Responding to this increasing demand from Headteachers the DfE announced on 11/04/2011, that any school irrespective of their Ofsted rating can now apply to be an Academy providing the school can make a "compelling case" for Academy status. The criteria to be considered when deciding whether there is a compelling case will be covered at the conference.

This one day conference will explore: the vision and rationale behind converting to Academy status; the impact it has had on attainment; the freedoms of Academies and the particular responsibilities associated with those freedoms; the role and responsibilities of the Academy Trust, Academy Governing Body and the Government's approach to future funding arrangements and policy changes for Academies and Schools.

The conference will be chaired by Mike Baker, an award-winning journalist, author, broadcaster and consultant, specialising in education. It will provide delegates with the opportunity to attend workshop sessions offering valuable insight and practical advice on the critical staffing, legal and financial responsibilities associated with the process of transition to Academy status and post transfer.

Key Topics Include:

•Policy Developments and Future Funding arrangements of Academies
•The role of the Young People’s Learning Agency in relation to Academies
