Many of us, professionals included, hope to increase our personal comfort levels by focusing on our own work and the issues confronting our lives. Over several decades, workforce research has indicated the need for more nursing leaders to engage in "big picture" thinking, followed by actions that create the quality and quantity of nursing personnel needed to insure safe and effective care for future generations.

Margaret L. McClure In this program, nursing legend Margaret L. McClure, EdD, RN, FAAN, will chronicle her own leadership journey, one that continues to propel professional nursing forward by creating the changes necessary to achieve the safest and most effective care. Her inspirational story will begin with her best-known contribution to the literature–a study entitled "Magnet Hospitals: Attraction and Retention of Professional Nurses"–which she co-authored under the auspices of the American Academy of Nursing. She will also discuss work that has already been done regarding this subject, and conclude with a discussion of her current work. Her work will create a seamless educational path for new nurses entering the profession, in support of the Institute of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson’s initiative: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010).

By facilitating an understanding of enlightened self-interest, Dr. McClure will imbue participants with strategies that facilitate "big picture" thinking such as the importance of (a) using scientifically generated evidence in all areas of practice, including nursing education; (b) using new technologies for communication, education and clinical practice to the extent that they expedite the goals of safe and effective care; (c) developing and implementing standards for continuing professional development throughout one’ s career; (d) employing reflective approaches to practice, constantly learning from both successes and failures; and (e) actively engaging in policy-making activities in the work place and at the state and national level.
